Fishing on the bays has been excellent. As we started getting into 90-100 we noticed a ton of bait and big fish on the bottom. No accumulations expected here on the WNY Lake Ontario Plain. A little bit hard to stay on top of trib water flows as it seems like Canal drainage water is being passed thru with select adjustments on the water managers end that only they know about. There could be fresh steelhead, fresh silver browns or drop back fish. Changes will take effect once you reload the page. The fish are placed in downstream pens at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina and will be fed and cared for before release in about 3 4 weeks. On the Oak guys are into more then a few cohos too. We left the dock at 6:00 and struggled to get our first bites. They will be held out of Oak Orchard. This was a Fathers Day fishing weekend out of Bald Eagle Marina. Release began Sept. 16, 2021 for the Oak. The best spinner/fly set up is DW Gator Flasher Spindoctor with an A-TOM-IK BAM fly. Most all ice cover looks to be moved out. Good chance for some icing conditions coming on there. Today the salmon did not disappoint us! Temps are cooler here then points south and more rain or showers are expected at least thru tomorrow. On the backside now of higher flows from about a week ago something like med to slightly high flows in the Oak and med in the smaller area waterways. Then the hit and misses kept on coming. The Archers Club will be open for parking 7 days/week beginning Oct 08 until Nov 11. Forecast is continued warm thru today and tonight with rain likely today/tonight. So much for the hope of drying out some. Anglers might consider releasing any overflow channel fish back into the turbine channel to give those fish best chances at returning to the Lake later this spring. Thru this weekend flows are prob more agreeable for better drifts but the water color is worse so there could be tougher action. With the heavy rains we received the past week and more on the way it doesnt look like it will be coming down anytime soon. Flows in the Oak are still humming along at slightly high consisting of a good head of turbine water. Flows are a big factor in the success of any oak orchard fishing trip. And along with the browns theres the chance for Atlantics, cohos or steelhead rounding out nice mixed bag chances. Very good. Dont be afraid to start targeting the warmer water many kings will hold and 60 to 67 water this time of year. Orleans County has the total package and the Big Fish! Look for a bit of a temp shock there and the fishing action back on the rebound as things warm back up. Some rain on the order of a 1/4 inch fell last night but not a big change in trib flows. That consistency the Oak is known for is showing thru once again. One warm water 40-50F hook-up is worth a half dozen 32 point something F hook ups! We found meat was the best bait. Intrepid anglers are capable of catching fish on the Oak in all of these flows, except for maybe blown AND dirty. Nearer the dam and just downstream should show a few more fish. Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. This Jan timeframe is historically a bit of an in-between time frame so any action is a bonus after the fall runs and before later winter/early spring steelhead. Rigger: 65-95 down. A little stain, something like 2 ft of visibility. Theres lots of good fishing for salmon, steelhead and brown trout ahead! The medium to slightly high flows in the Oak are proving to be a nice draw for Kings. Downstream slow water spots are for sure locked up and even upstream all the way to the dam is frozen except for a rivulet here and there or if you were to break something open. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. Still some steelhead action hanging on in the Oak thanks to a return to good high flows without any real spike in water temps yet. Thru the past weekend we heard of guys getting steelhead hookups nearer the dam including a few good fish. Required fields are marked *. Ground flow recharge from strong supplies might keep things up a little higher then typical winter levels but never-the-less things will be icing in or freezing up except for a few fast water slots. Since we are not getting cold temps and/or snow, hopefully we can get rain along with the warm temps to help maintain flows. Some days youll find the only active fish up in that warm water so dont be afraid to fish up high. This is kind of a reset (at least when it warms back up) and with a return to some more inviting flows and stained water there should be new migrations of spring fish. Expect water level fluctuations thanks to hydro power operations and whats been a delayed leaf fall. Most noticeable drop will be the Oak since the Canal flows are also throttling back. Look for cooperative wind and wave action now and thru mid week with chance for higher wind forecast at the end of the week and subsequent tougher dirtier water chances. That flow is still actually fishable unless its high AND dirty. The Greater Niagara Fish Odyssey is underway in Erie, Niagara and Orleans County August 20 until September 5, 2021. We are hearing of a few more browns now in the Oak, especially thru yesterday. And really you may not want to give up completely on salmon efforts just yet. Most guys upstream- ish report good action while those downstream like in the flat water report tougher action. Must be the the cool Bauer and GLoomis spey gear that made it happen for Chuck the Swinger end of Apr 2021! Sunday morning started out like gang busters. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. There is plenty of water cover to hide fish or to encourage any late migrations of browns or early migrations of steelhead. For now, flows in the Oak are moderate and slightly stained and no icing. There is some downstream frog water action. Even during the current COVID-19 public health crisis, getting outdoors and connecting with nature while angling in New Yorks waters is a great way to help maintain mental and physical health. Avoid close contact, such as shaking hands, hugging, and kissing. All our boat ramps are open. Anglers are finding it an up year for Atlantics and cohos. The steelhead were strong and vigorous and silver so hopefully indicating good health and smolting. Look for flows all around to continue to drop and clear and we might begin to see some icing at least in the smaller waterways. Any emergency Canal drainage flows are now tempered and so that leaves tribs like the Oak and Sandy mostly to regular run of the river flows. . What more could you ask for for small area trib action!? Not sure yet how much of a change in flows in the Oak well see, but with the precip received so far it shouldnt be bad enough for a blow out. Flows are actually up just a bit from earlier in the week when the visibility was less. On the Oak there should be the chance for fresh chrome action esp when the flows are agreeable like now or on the backside of any future high water. Once pressured, browns may move a little distance from the tails of the salmon but they will still likely be in the closest broken water downstream. Real low, low, mod, mod to med, med, slightly high, slightly high to high, high, real high, blown. Look for improving action thru the month with cooling weather or cooperating wind and waves and water color. Ernie Calandrelli has been slapping the eyes with harnesses. A few good browns reported to be hooked up yesterday on the Oak. Depending on your perspective some might call it only slightly high. The current leader is now a 32-pound, 4-ounce fish reeled in by Zane Smith of New Brighton, PA while fishing out of Olcott this week. Christmas rain brought all the trib flows up with stained water color. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30s F on the Oak and prob going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. Typical more summer- like weather is setting in, including steady southwest to west breezes perfect for attracting even more fish to Orleans County/Lake Ontario waters off the Oak! Steelhead have been there and more likely to trickle in. Lets hope the weather keeps serving up the so-far good fishing chances! We received 10,000 steelhead and 113,500 salmon from the DEC today as part of the Pen Rearing Project to keep the lake stocked. Reasonable fishing pressure with fair to good numbers of Kings spread from near shore big Lake O waters to upstream fast water spots, in some cases right past anglers not there yet to intercept with a drift. Chance of rain again on Wednesday. DEC has received a few reports of dead fish on Sandy Creek and Johnson Creek, likely due to fishing mortality, but has not received any reports of abnormally large numbers of dead fish from Oak Orchard Creek. Spring spoon casting action for brown trout at the pier heads and lakeshore when wind and waves come together to bring that semi stained water within casting range. With the flows observed today anglers should be able to cover all the fishy water pretty effectively. So far thru today the heavier rains have been south of here and the trend looks like the Oak is on the rise while the smaller tribs are barely dropping or holding steady.
